  • April is Alcohol Awareness Month.

Alcohol is one of the most prevalent drugs on the market. It is frequently seen in movies and TV shows as a way to relax after a long day or to deal with a stressful situation. While most people can drink (regular, binge or heavy use) without being an alcoholic, for some, alcohol begins to control their lives.

Here are some quick facts related to alcohol use and abuse:

    •   1/3 of all traffic fatalities are alcohol-related.
    •   11% of all alcohol consumed in the United States is consumed by 12 – 20 year-olds.
    •   Binge drinking for women is 4 or more drinks during one occasion.
    •   Binge drinking for men is 5 or more drinks during one occasion.
    •   Heavy drinking for women is 8 or more drinks per week.
    •   Heavy drinking for men is 15 or more drinks per week.

Are you concerned about your drinking? Do you wonder if you are drinking in excess? Here are some tips to consider:

    • It takes 20 minutes for your stomach and body to register the alcohol that you drank. If you wait between drinks for 20 minutes, or drink water between drinks, you will get a better assessment of your true alcohol consumption.
    • Take a weekend to be alcohol free and see how you feel.
